Abstract

The central carbonyl group in a vicinal tricarbonyl system has attracted attention as a highly electrophilic site. We have recently demonstrated the synthetic utility of this reactive unit in the formation of fused ring /3-lactams' and natural products in the vincamine,* i~oquinoline,~ and prodigiosin4
