Abstract: 2-(2-Methyl-1-phenylpropenyl) benzophenone (V) has been found to be photochromic at low temperatures, The colored species, which appears to be the valence tautomer VI, could be trapped as a Diels-Alder adduct with tetracyanoethylene. Prolonged ultraviolet irradiation of V in benzene afforded 1, l-dimethyl-2, 3-diphenyl-2, 3-epoxyindan (VIII), while in methanol 4, 4-dimethyl-l, 3-diphenyl-l-methoxyisochroman (X) was formed. ...
