Abstract
3-Alkylthiopropenals (RSCH= CH-CHO) have been prepared in modest yields by the free radical-initiated reaction of an alkyl thiol, acetylene and carbon monoxide. An important concurrent reaction is the interaction of the acetylene with the thiol to give al, a-disulfide, a reaction which takes place in high yield in the absence of carbon monoxide.
