Abstract
Birch-type reduction of phenanthrene, anthracene, naphthalene, and several substituted naphthalenes efficiently occurs upon irradiation of 9 1 acetonitrile-water solutions in the presence of sodium borohydride and m-or p-dicyanobenzene.
