Abstract Reaction of a trialkyl phosphite (VI) or sodium salt of dialkyl phosphite (V) with bromomethyl acetate afforded dialkyl acetoxymethanephosphonates VII which were alcoholyzed to dialkyl hydroxymethanephosphonates VIII.
