Abstract
Deuterium labelling experiments reveal a remarkably different hydrogen addition mode during homogeneously catalysed CC bond reduction of itaconic acid derivatives 1a–d using molecular hydrogen (hydrogenation) or formic acid/triethylamine (transfer hydrogenation).
