Abstract
The synthesis of 2-nitro-4, 5dimethoxyphenyl derivatives of EGTA and EDTA is reported. These tetracarboxylate chelators are designed for the rapid photochemically initiated release of divalent cations in intact physiological systems. The key step in the synthesis is the use of high-pressure synthetic technology for the construction of the tertiary amine moiety of both types of chelator.
