Abstract

2-Nitropropane is oxidized by air to acetone and nitrite ion in an autocatalytic manner in the presence of an excess of aqueous base at room temperature. The reaction is catalyzed by the addition of ferric and other ions and completely inhibited by the addition of arsenic trioxide and other compounds.
