Abstract
from the nitroso compound failed. Utilization of the modified techniques developed for the preparation of o-naphthoquinones in a high state of purity from 1-nitroso-2-naphthols6 served only to confirm the observations of Fieser and Kennelly3 on the instability of this quinone. Similarly 5-hydroxy-4-nitrosobenzothiophene-2-carboxylic acid could not be converted into the corresponding 4, 5-quinone.
