Abstract

When (I) is boiled in an excess of acetic anhydride with aromatic aldehydes (p- hydroxybenzaldehyde, 5-bromosalicyZaldehyde, and p-acetylaminobenzaldehyde) in the presence of sodium acetate, the styryl derivatives (ZZ-ZV) are obtained, The hydroxy-group in the 3-position in (ll) and (ZIZ) is readily replaceable by chlorine on treatment with phosphoryl chloride, giving the 3-chloro-2-styrylquinoxalines (V) and (VI),
