Abstract

Abstract: Several 8-substituted 9, lO-ethanoanthracene-l-, 8-substituted 9, lO- dihydroanthracene-l-, and 8-substituted anthracene-l-carboxylic acids have been prepared. The dissociation constants for the acids have been measured in 50% aqueous ethanol. Many traditionally acid-strengthening dipolar substituents, for example, the fluoro, chloro, and cyano groups, exhibit the opposite influence in the bridged anthracenes. Empirical ...
