Abstract Benzotriazol-1-ylmethylamines on treatment with alkylating agents afford benzotriazol-1-ylmethylammoni-um salts, also available from reactions of chloromethylbenzotriazole with tertiary amines. In deuterated solvents under basic conditions the methylene protons of these salts exchange with deuterium.
