Abstract
Although N-(substituted aminoacy1)-anilines were prepared as early as 1891,'Einhorn2 was the first in 1898 to recognize their ability to produce a local anesthetic effect. These early compounds were too irritating for clinical use. It was not till 1946 when Lofgren3 prepared a- diethylamino-2, 6-dimethylacetanilide (lidocaine) that an anesthetic of this structure was used clinically to any extent.
