Abstract: Ionization of 2-a-naphthylethyl chloride (5) and 2-0-naphthylethyl chloride (9) in FS03H-SbF5/S02CIF at-80" C gave the protonated naphthalenium ions 6 and 10 or the rearranged naphthylethyl cation 8, which were observed by carbon-1 3 and proton NMR spectroscopy.
