Abstract
Aromatic carboxylic acids undergo homolytic decarboxylation in aromatic solvents at 125- 200'in the presence of oxygen and large amounts of di-t-butyl peroxide or t-butyl hydroperoxide. Cobalt salts exert a strong catalytic effect on the reaction, and evidence that this effect results from direct oxidation of the substrate by cobalt (II1) is presented.
