Abstract
In order to test a hypothesis which postulates certain features of the phenanthrene ring system to be essential for hydrocarbon carcinogens, the following two hydrocarbons were synthesized: 1-methyl-3-isopropylphenanthrene by a route involving the Pschorr reaction; 6, 11-dimethylnaphthacene via hydroxynaphthacenequinone.
