Abstract: The solvolyses of 1-adamantylcarbinyl arenesulfonates in various solvents have been studied as a model for interpretation of the corresponding reactions of neopentyl derivatives. Whereas the later yield products derived entirely from the t-amyl cation, it has not been clear whether the ionization and rearrangement processes are concerted or sequential.
