Abstract: Phenyl alkyl ketones generally undergo type I1 photoelimination and photocyclization solely from their lowest n, a* triplet states. Photolysis of p, ydiphenylbutyrophenone yields no triplet stilbene, which would be formed in a concerted elimination. It is concluded that y-hydrogen abstraction to yield a 1, 4 biradical is faster than the energetically allowed concerted elimination. It is suggested that the sequence triplet-+ ...
