Abstract

3 rings cis fused. Reconversion of this anhydride into the diester lb under neutral conditions allowed us to assign the indicated configurations at C-9 to the acid derivatives 1. Since the diester lb was not epimerized when treated with methanolic sodium methoxide, the indicated stereochemical arrangement with both carbomethoxy groups cis is also the more stable epimer.
