Abstract

Guaiaretic acid (I, R= H), a key compound in the elucidation of the absolute configuration of lignans, a occurs in Guaiacum oficinale L.* together with a number of related compo~ nds.~ Its isolation has, however, been complicated by the presence of a contaminant, which lowers the optical rotation of the crude product and from which it is not readily separated.
