Abstract
5-Aminolevulinic acid, an unusual amino acid, possesses high water solubility and corresponding low lipid solubility and thereby has limited ability to cross biological membranes. Various 5-aminolevulinic acid esters have been synthesized to obtain more lipophilic prodrugs.
