Abstract

Plant-derived seed oils are of current interest in the context of renewable hydrocarbon-type industrial feedstocks.[1, 2] Functionalization of oleochemicals adds value to this commodity and is achieved by a set of O2-dependent, non-heme diiron enzymes known as desaturases.[3–5] The FAD2 subfamily is particularly interesting because of the mechanistic diversity exhibited by this set of sequence-related membrane proteins (Scheme 1).
