Abstract

Since its discovery in 1984, 1 1,1-dimethylethyl 4-formyl-2,2-dimethyloxazolidine-3-carboxylate 4, also known as the Garner aldehyde, has been used more than 400 times in syntheses and research studies, which makes it one of the most useful chiral synthons. 2 As a result considerable effort has been invested in developing a convenient procedure for the synthesis of this reagent.
