Abstract: In contrast to meso-methylanthracenes, which are oxidized by one-electron oxidants to hydroxymethyl derivatives, meso-ethylanthracenes such as 9, lO- diethylanthracene (DEA) undergo a facile chemical or biochemical oxidative elimination of ethylene to yield an anthrone.
