Abstract: The study of conformational preferences of representative phenyl methyl ethers and phenyl methyl ketones by'H relaxation techniques is reported. The conformational preference of both functional groups is shown to derive from unequal a-electron density at the positions ortho to these groups and an increase in relative populations of a conformer is shown to correlate with an increase in relative a-electron density.
