Abstract: In dimethylformamide (DMF) superoxide ion (02-) oxygenates compounds with the trichloromethyl group: CCI4, HCC13, and FCCI, yield bicarbonate ion; PhCCI3 yields a mixture of PhC (0) OO-and PhC (0) O-; CF, CCl3 and HOCH2CC13 give their carboxylate anions, RC (0) O-; and p, p'-DDT yields its dehydrochlorination product, DDE, which in turn reacts with 0,-to give (p-C1Ph) 2C= 0.
