Abstract
Mesityl phenyl diketone (I) was selected for study because it appeared to afford an opportunity of determining the behavior of one of the carbonyl groups of an alpha diketone without interference from the other. It was supposed that the car- bonyl group adjacent to the mesityl radical would be unaffected by most reagents, and that the diketone would, in fact, behave as a monoketone, in which, however, the carbonyl group would be unusually reactive.
