Abstract
Summary 1. Dibenzoyl ethylene has been prepared by the action of fumaryl chloride on benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride. Derivatives of dibenzoyl ethylene have been prepared by the use of toluene, chloro- benzene, mesitylene and anisole. 2. The product of the reaction is the colored trans isomer which is converted to the colorless cis isomer by the action of sunlight; the reverse transformation is caused by acid or a trace of iodine.
