Abstract
The hypoxic response can be induced in cells by reagents including cobaltous ions and non-specific iron chelators (eg desferrioxamine); 2 these reagents may effect their activity by competing with iron (cobaltous ions) or depriving the HIF hydroxylases of ferrous iron (desferrioxamine), though other mechanisms are possible.
