Abstract
4-Hydroxyhept-5-en-3-one, CHMe: CH* CH (OH)* COEt, has been synthesised from crotonaldehyde cyanohydrin and ethylmagnesium bromide and found to undergo double prototropic rearrangement with great ease to heptane-3: 4-dione, Me-CH,* CH,* CO* COEt.
