Abstract
Although the reaction of tetrachloroethylene with thiolates has been known for some time, 5 its stereochemical and mechanistic course was unknown. It was observed in this Laboratory that tetrachloroethylene undergoes a stereospecific reaction with sodium p-toluenethiolate, the product being cis-l, 2-dichloro-1, 2-di-(p-tolylmercapto)-ethene.
