Abstract
To develop a general synthesis of a-alkoxyacrylonitriles 1 and a-thioalkoxyacrylonitriles 2 which would avoid these multistep sequences, we required a Wittig reagent which could introduce the a-alkoxyacrylonitrile or a-thioalkoxyacrylonitrile synthon in a single operation.
