Abstract
Heterogeneous, catalytic, transfer hydrogenolysisl may result in enhanced selectivity in the deprotection of benzyl ethers of polyols and has been utilised in carbohydrate chemistry2~ 3. Our preliminary results4 indicated that, in conformationally rigid molecules, benzyl groups may act as hydrogen donors and partially O-benzoylated derivatives could be obtained when the reaction was carried out in the presence 'of atmospheric oxygen.
