Abstract Aldehydes and ketones can be protected as acetals and ketals by treatment with trimethyl orthoformate (TMOF) or triethyl orthoformate (TEOF) under the catalytic influence of tetrafluoroboric acid adsorbed on silica gel (HBF 4-SiO 2).
