Abstract

In connection with our on-going research program on the total synthesis 10 of fused ring isocoumarin natural products through thermal rearrangement of epoxides, we had the opportunity to investigate the reactivity of indenone epoxides towards metal carbonyls. This study has yielded the finding that deoxygenation of α,β-epoxy ketones and α,β-epoxy esters can be smoothly performed with the use of an equimolar amount of Mo(CO) 6 in benzene or toluene under mild conditions.
