Abstract

Summary Flaxseed mucilage yields on hydrolysis an aldobionic acid consisting of one molecule of d-galacturonic acid and one molecule of 2-rhamnose. The molecule is joined together by a glucosidic linkage involving the aldehyde group of the d-galacturonic acid and an alcohol group of the 2-rhamnose. This mucilage is similar in composition and structure to some of the plant gums.
