【用途二】
用作石油催化剂、铈盐原料，也用于制金属铈等。当把氯化铈添加到氰基羟醛（nitrile aldol ）反应时，非对称异构体选择性增强，提高了β-羟基氰（β-hydroxynitriles）的收率。

1.稀土铵复盐法以稀土硫酸铵复盐为原料，经氢氧化钠转化为氢氧化稀土，再用空气氧化为四价铈，经稀盐酸浸出，将铈富集，再经溶解、萃取、结晶，制得氯化铈。
2.含水氯化物装在硬质玻璃管中的石英舟里，用减压装置(维持水银柱高25cm)以1cm3/s的速度通入纯净、干燥的HCl气体，在电炉内70℃温度下维持3h，然后逐步升温到160℃，维持1～2h，再慢慢升温到250℃，趁热打开炉子，转移石英管到保干器(浓硫酸做干燥剂)里面，冷却，然后将产物转移到热的、干燥的试剂瓶，迅速密封即可。
3.按化学计量关系称取反应物，反应物装在悬于电炉中的石英管(d=13～25mm,l=7～25cm)中，选择的电炉应能使样品管各个部位的温度尽可能一致。反应管入口与蒸馏烧瓶的侧口相连(蒸馏烧瓶连有聚四氟乙烯管子)，出口与冷凝接收器(连有聚乙烯管子)相连，每做一次实验后聚乙烯管都需要更换，而聚四氟乙烯管不会受反应的影响(装置如图所示)。
以0.22～0.27g/(min·cm)的速度从样品管滴加CCl4到蒸馏烧瓶中。可用蒸馏烧瓶上的聚四氟乙烯管上的螺旋夹子调整CCl4的流速。用电热罩维持蒸馏烧瓶的温度为100℃，而使用电热带维持预热部分(连接蒸馏烧瓶与反应管的侧管部分)的温度在120℃。
按下列要求控制反应炉温度：500℃ 6h，550℃ 15h，600～650℃ 8h。
反应完成后，通过惰性气体入口充入Ar或者其他惰性气体。断开反应管，配上活塞，连接真空系统，抽真空，密封保存。
