由萘经氯磺酸磺化而得。磺化反应以邻硝基乙苯作溶剂,将萘、氯磺酸和邻硝基乙苯按摩尔比1:1.1:3配合,在0-5℃进行磺化反应,得纯度为97%的1-萘磺酸。如果采用98%的硫酸作磺化剂,反应温度为0-40℃,得到的磺化物含1-萘磺酸83-85%,2-萘磺酸15-17%,加入镁盐或钠盐,可将析出的2-萘磺酸的镁盐或钠盐滤除。含游离1-萘磺酸的滤液经浓缩、冷却、结晶、过滤、水洗、干燥而得成品。
