In a previous paper it was shown that triphenylmethylmagnesium bromide reacts with aromatic ketones and with benzils 'in an unusual manner. The MgBr group of the Grignard reagent adds to the oxygen atom of the C= O group of the ketone but the triphenylmethyl group does not join to the carbon atom; instead, it remains free as the radical.
