The work described in this paper was initiated by an observation that a by-product from a somewhat unusual chemical reaction showed some unexpected pharmacological activity. During an attempted preparation of 2-methyl-3-indoleglyoxylic acid hydrazide, ethyl 2- methyl-3-indoleglyoxylate (I)* was subjected to hydrazinolysis with hydrazine hydrate.
