Function: Ergothioneine (EGT) is the only long-acting natural antioxidant that can penetrate both mitochondria and the nucleus. It provides UV protection, helps maintain skin elasticity, brightens the complexion, and combats aging. Ergothioneine significantly inhibits tyrosinase, thereby blocking melanin synthesis and demonstrating skin-brightening effects. Tyrosinase is an enzyme that regulates melanin production and is associated with excessive pigmentation such as freckles and dark spots in humans. Ergothioneine has also been reported to exhibit various other pharmacological activities. For instance, it is present at very high levels in breast milk, where it supports neurogenesis and development in infants, enhances memory, and alleviates symptoms of mental disorders.
