【用途一】
用作分析试剂、有机合成中间体和防腐剂

【用途二】
有机合成原料，用于制联苯甲酰等；医药工业用于生产抗癫痫药苯妥英纳、抗胆碱药胃复康和安胃灵。也可用于染料生产。苯偶姻醚类可用作感光性树脂的光增感剂、照相凹版油墨、光固化型涂料。最近又用于速干性涂料。主要是：苯偶姻异丙醚为白色或浅黄褐色粉末，熔点77-81℃。苯偶姻乙醚为白色粉末，熔点56℃以上。苯偶姻异丁醚（Benzoin isobutyl ether)国际市场上90%纯度的商品沸点133℃（66.7Pa），相对密度0.985（20/4℃），折光率1.5485。作为光增感剂，在性能方面以乙醚最佳，其次为异丙醚和异丁醚，产品的稳定性以异丁醚为最佳。

【方法一】
苯甲醛在热氰化钾或氰化钠的乙醇溶液中反应，即可生成苯偶姻。氰离子在反应中为一特殊催化剂，多数芳香醛均可进行此反应，因其相当于两分子醛缩合，该反应称为安息香缩合。将两种不同的醛混合在一起进行安息香缩合，可以得到混合的安息香。将苯甲醛、乙醇混合，用氢氧化钠溶液调节pH值至7-8，加入3%的氰化钠溶液，在75-80℃回流0.5h，降温至10℃以下过滤，滤饼洗至无氰根即得苯偶姻，收率90%以上。
