Abstract

(−)-Kainic acid (1, Figure 1) is a naturally occurring pyrrolidine with functionalized substituents at C-2, C-3, and C-4 in a trans-cis relationship. Isolated from Digenea simplex in the early 1950s,(1) it was originally used in anthelmintic and insecticide preparations.
