Abstract

According to the present conception of the Friedel-Crafts reaction, a positive alkyl or acyl ion attacks the aromatic hydrocarbon at that position where the center of electron density is greatest. When the electron density of the hydrocarbon is decreased by the presence of meta-directing substituents, reaction takes place less readily or fails completely.
