Abstract

2-Acetyl-3 (2H)-benzofuranone (la) reacts with hydrazine to yield 2-(l-hydrazino-l- hydroxyethyl)-3 (2H)-benzofuranone (Z), the a-azine of 2-acetyl-3 (2H)-benzofuranone (4) or 3 (2H)-benzofuranone hydrazone depending upon the conditions, whereas 2-benzoyl-and 2- (2, 4-dimethylbenzoyl)-3 (2H)-benzofuranones (lb and IC) give 3-phenyl-and 3-(2, 4-xylyl)-lH- benzofuro [3, 2-c] pyrazoles (Sa and Sb), respectively.
