Abstract
Lactone formation occurred when a solution of the acid (111) in acetyl chloride was allowed to evaporate in a vacuum desiccator. The product was partially soluble in boiling methylcyclohexane, the solution being deep rect at the boiling point. When the solution was cooled the color faded to a faint pink. The lactone (0.5 9.) crystallized from methylcyclohexane in clusters of white needles; mp 179.5-180'.
