Abstract

The photochemical reaction of chromium carbene (Fischer) complexes and readily available hinodithimbonates forms 4, 4-bis (methylthio) &lactams in good to excellent yields, and upon N-bromosuccinimide oxidation, these afford 4-oxo@-lactams (malonimides). Basic hydrolysis of the latter compounds yields malonic acid derivatives that are not otherwise easily accessible.
