主要作为染料中间体,用以制作红色基GL、甲基胺红色淀、碱性品红,甲基周位酸及4-氨基甲苯-3-磺酸,三苯基甲烷染料和噁嗪染料等。亦作为医药乙胺嘧啶、农药杀草隆等产品的中间体。
【用途四】
光度测定金、钛(Ⅲ)、钨。检定金、银、锇、铂、硝酸盐、亚硝酸盐、间苯三酚和木质素。测定羧酸和磺酸。测定分子量的溶剂。有机合成用于生产4B酸及合成染料。

对甲苯胺制备
1.由对硝基甲苯在124-126℃、0.2MPa表压下,用硫化钠还原制得对甲苯胺,反应液静置分层,分去水层,然后经减压蒸馏、冷凝、结晶、干燥,得成品。
精制方法:一般可用精制苯胺的方法精制。从它的熔融物分步结晶,可使对甲苯胺与邻位和间位异构体分离。用于分步结晶的对甲苯胺是经过热水(活性炭)、乙醇、苯、石油醚或乙醇和水的混合物(1:4)重结晶和真空干燥过的。也可以在减压下于30℃升华精制。为了进一步的纯化可将其制成草酸盐、硫酸盐或乙酰基衍生物。例如将蒸馏3次,30℃升华2次的对甲苯胺溶解于5倍量的乙醚中,加入溶于乙醚的等当量草酸,析出对甲苯胺的草酸盐,过滤后用蒸馏水重结晶3次,再加入碳酸钠水溶液,将游离出的对甲苯胺用蒸馏水重结晶3次,再用乙醇反复重结晶可得纯品。
2. 甲苯硝化后还原成甲基苯胺,其异构体可用40%甲醛水溶液分离,经减压蒸馏即得,再于石油醚中重结晶即可。
