所有的接头均为锥形,活塞使用硅酮润滑脂。在管B中投入256g(0.0534mol)的纯海绵钛,置于2段约8cm玻璃棉填充物之间。放入玻璃棉是为了使钛所处的位置不发生移动。同时也起到了使反应进行完全、减缓碘的扩散速度的作用。连接管A和管B,用电炉Ⅰ加热管B至400~425℃,管B中通入干燥的氮气,使氮气从钛上流过。氮气事先通过浓硫酸,再通过装有分子筛的塔进行干燥。管B加热至400或425℃后,将装有碘2710g(0.1068mol)的管C与管B连接起来。停止氮气流,用真空泵将全系统抽真空(1.33Pa左右)。随后将三通旋塞旋至图示的位置。用电炉Ⅱ加热至80℃使碘升华,慢慢导入反应区B中,使之与钛反应。待所有的碘从管C升华出来以后(需10~12h),将氮气通入系统,将装置冷却至室温。除去管C,用带钩的铜丝扒出玻璃棉填充物及未反应的钛(0.23g),用液氮洗涤。接着洗净管C,干燥之,再与管B连接。将管B从与A相接处摘下,保持垂直,在此期间,将图示的暗红褐色的环状产物用刮勺迅速刮掉,立即加以密封。

精制产物采用如图所示装置。首先洗净管A及管B,干燥后,往B中填塞干燥的玻璃棉后,再连接起来,产物装入管C中,将管C与管B连接起来。将系统抽真空,并保持抽真空的状态。使两个电炉相距约15cm。将电炉Ⅰ加热至80℃,将电炉Ⅱ加热至130~140℃。连续升华12~16h,使粗产品四碘化钛从管C全部升华出来。精制品在两个电炉之间的地方结晶析出。主要杂质碘可在管A及液氮阱内结晶。在管C中残留的褐色残余物甚微,可忽略不计。必要时,还可将B管进一步放入电炉Ⅱ中,再次进行精制。冷却后导入氮气,摘下管C,除去玻璃棉填充物。将带有氮气导入支管及活塞的干燥烧瓶安装在管B上,通过管B将氮气导入烧瓶中。接着,将支管与干燥氮气发生器连接起来,使氮气流以反方向导入,即使氮气能经支管通过烧瓶而导入反应管中。将管B与管A分开,将生成物刮落于烧瓶中。摘下管B,将烧瓶加塞。收量为25.0g。
