工业生产有盐酸法和一步氯化法。

1.盐酸法 将盐酸和洗净的铁屑加入反应器中进行反应,生成二氯化铁溶液,经澄清后,把氯气通入清液进行氯化反应,生成三氯化铁溶液,加入除砷剂和除重金属剂进行溶液提纯,过滤除去杂质,再澄清,把清液冷却结晶,固液分离、干燥,制得食用六水三氯化铁成品,其反应方程式如下:

以铁屑或铁粉、盐酸为原料,反应完毕后,经冷却结晶,析出棕黄色粒状三氯化铁结晶。 2.用铁丝或铁粉溶于低于计算量的盐酸中(必要时可加热)。滤去不溶物。往生成的氯化亚铁水溶液中通入氯气,直至发出氯气的臭味为止。或者用硝酸氧化,然后与浓盐酸一起反复蒸发,直至不再显NO-3的反应为止。此时二价铁离子已完全氧化为三价铁离子而不需再检验有残存二价铁离子[例如用六氰合铁(Ⅲ)酸钾K3[Fe(CN)6]水溶液进行试验即可]。将上面制得的氯化铁水溶液蒸发浓缩,至溶液冷却后全部变为固体时为止。由于浓缩过程中氯化氢不断损失,故需经常通入氯化氢。
